DIY Sunroom – Week 1: Demolition, Design Plan

Hi everyone, it’s Ben again and week 1 of the project is in the books. We completed the small amount of demolition required, completed the design plan and ordered the windows and doors! We are well committed now and this is where I tell Rose, “there’s no changing our minds now!” Be sure to read the kickoff post for this project is you haven’t already.

Demolition

Demolition for this job was pretty straight forward. First, I removed the faux casing from the two front columns of the porch. Next, I removed the decorative cross pieces of open windows. Last, I removed the siding from end wall. With all this complete, we will be ready to start framing next week.

Design Plan

DIY Sunroom - Week 1: Demolition, Design Plan

We completed the design plan for both the inside and outside, along with a detailed construction plan. We were able to find great big 8ft wide x 8ft tall sliding glass doors from Jeld-Wen via Home Depot. This maintains the same view we had before enclosure. Since there is not much wall space around the new windows and doors, we decided not to use siding on the exterior. Instead we plan to use all trim boards and trim color.

We were also able to find a tall narrow window, also from Jeld-Wen that fit the space in the small opening on the left wall. For the end wall, we went with two 4ft wide x 2ft tall windows that start about 6ft high. This will give us privacy while still allowing light and air through. We made sure to have windows on both ends of the sunroom to make sure there was a good breeze available in the warmer months. Finally, we made sure all the new windows and doors were at the same height at the top so that they were all on the same visual line.

Overall it was a very busy and productive week. Next week we tackle framing and there are a couple of challenges to overcome. Check back next week to see how we did!
