Final Reveal
This is the moment we have been building up to and are excited for the final reveal of our finished DIY Sunroom! We are already beginning to enjoy the fruits of our labor as our whole family loves the extra space and the comfortable and peaceful atmosphere. Our little ones love exploring and playing, and our oldest enjoys playing games with the family at the game table. We adults enjoy getting our days started with our morning tea and coffee while being close to nature. If you’re just tuning in, be sure to read the previous posts for this project starting here.
These last two weeks, Rose has been hard at work to transform a pretty typical Sunroom into such a beautiful and peaceful space. She blew me away with her design! I hope you are as impressed with it as I am. I never imagined this room would look like this and I am just amazed!
Two Distinct Spaces
There are no DIY details this week as this part was all Rose. Except for me helping her move some stuff around and hang a few things, she deserves all the credit. Still, there are quite a few design details to point out in here. Rose designed this room with two distinct spaces. The room was perfect for that since it was quite long. The first part of the room is the family sitting area where we can visit with one another, look out the tall glass doors and enjoy the scenery. The second part of the room is a family game area.
Swing Bed
In the sitting area, the star of this space is the swing bed. Rose asked me early on if we could include a swing bed in here as it was always on her mind for this Sunroom. Buying a swing bed was not in the budget though and my woodworking skills are intermediate at best. However, when she showed me the swing bed design she had in mind, I realized I might actually be able to make it. I quickly drew up a plan and calculated the cost of the materials, and gave her the good news. The swing bed was now part of the plan! I actually made it a few weeks back and I will do a blog post next week on how I did it. Anyway, the swing bed came out great and we all love it! It is the focal point of the space and helps give the room that comfortable and peaceful feeling we were wanting in there.
Color Palette
Rose chose a calm color palette using olive green, natural wood and black. She brought out the olive green with the olive trees, accent pillows and plants. The natural wood was displayed in the manila ropes of the swing bed, rattan chairs and olive trees. She highlighted the black in most of the furniture for the space and other décor. It is a beautiful and cohesive color combination used throughout the entire room. It also brings the outside into the room to make it feel like it is an extension of nature.
Sitting Area Elements
In addition to the swing bed, the sitting area has a comfortable rattan chair and a simple pouf around the coffee table I made. This is the perfect sitting area to visit with one another, lounge around, read a book, enjoy a cup of coffee or even take a nap! I think the pouf was a really smart idea since it serves as a comfy seat without blocking access or view of the doors. Rose grounded this area with a calm area rug that has an interesting pattern without taking over the room. She used two tall and narrow olive trees on the sides of the swing bed. These were the perfect size to bring color and life to the space without making it feel cramped. We found the perfect live plant for the side of the swing bed where it will get plenty of light. It is full of lush white flowers and its name is “Lily of the Valley!” That name has significant meaning for us and helps remind us of who we serve. Rose rounded out the space with simple accent pillows and décor pieces.
Family Game Area
Rose made the other side of the room into a family game area. It features a simple black table where the family can gather to play games and do other activities. We can also sit in the nook under the window for a little reading! The seating consists of a couple of black chairs with rattan backs and the repurposed toy chest in the nook under the window. Rose always likes to mix the old with the new and she did that here with a antique brass candle sconce on the wall. Finally, she showed off some more of God’s handiwork with a lovely tree branch in bloom.
Overall the design is just beautiful and I couldn’t be more pleased. Way to go Rose!! I know we will use and enjoy these spaces for years to come.
Tribute to Dad
We are so grateful to my dad for helping us with this project. We definitely couldn’t have done this without his expertise, dedication and hard work. He is the best man I know and my hero. Thank you Dad, I love you!!
A lot of hard work has been poured into this room, but it was definitely worth it because it has brought us closer as a family and helped us discover our God-given talents.
