DIY Sunroom – Week 8: Exterior Paint

In week 8 of our Sunroom project, we selected the paint color for the exterior and painted it. Just a few finishing touches and the outside is complete! If you’re just tuning in, be sure to read the previous posts for this project starting here.

Exterior Paint Selection

So before we get started painting, we have the ever important decision of which paint color to use for the exterior. We wanted a color that would blend in with the current color scheme. However, one problem we had was that the new windows and doors are white whereas for the rest of the house they are a sand color. Both the colors being used for the exterior siding and trim are shades of beige that are a little too dark in our opinion. We think the white would stand out too much with either of those colors. Choosing a bright white color that matches the windows and doors would also be too much of a contrast with the rest of the house. We ended up choosing White Heron by Sherwin Williams. This color is just right and is darker than white, but lighter than the light beige trim.

For the type of paint, we chose Sherwin Williams’ Superpaint Exterior. This paint has the right combination of features at a good price point. We chose gloss for the sheen since the we chose the entire sunroom exterior to be trim. Gloss also protects very well and it is easy to clean.

Now that we had chosen the paint and color to use, it was time to get started painting. I gave my dad this week off since he had been working so hard and I thought we could manage painting without him. Rose and our oldest daughter pitched in and we knocked it out in a few hours. I took care of all the high areas while they took on the lower. Rose requested that we paint this new color all the way up to the roof line on all sides for a continuous look. I think that was a great call and it looks very nice.

Well that’s it for this week. There’s just not a whole lot to talk about with painting. Next week we’ll be painting the inside of the sunroom which is significantly more surface area to cover. It will be quite a challenge so be sure to check in to see how it turns out!
