DIY Sunroom – Week 9: Interior Paint

In week 9 of our Sunroom project, we tackled the interior paint.  This was quite the undertaking, but it looks great! If you’re just tuning in, be sure to read the previous posts for this project starting here.

Interior Paint Color Selection

Once again, a very important part of painting is getting the color right. This time, the choice for us was pretty easy. Rose wanted the inside of the Sunroom to be white and we already have some rooms inside our house that are a nice shade of white. So, we just went with the same color which is Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.

Interior Paint Type Selection

Now you would probably think that was all there was to it, but you would be wrong. Where we always seem to get hung up is the sheen of the paint. Rose really likes the look of flat paint in her designs, but I abhor it! Flat paint is so easy to mark up and difficult to clean. In our house, it seems like a new mark pops up on the wall every day. I finally convinced her to go with an eggshell sheen which I think is a good compromise.

As for the type of paint, we chose our go-to interior paint which is Harmony by Sherwin Williams. This stuff is great because it is zero VOC and literally has no odor. If you struggle with the odor when painting your home, then you need to use this paint. It also goes on well and is not expensive. We highly recommend this paint and it is all we use indoors.

I am aware that Sherwin Williams has a washable flat paint which would seemingly resolve the sheen conflict between Rose and me. The problem is that this washable flat paint only comes in their Emerald and Duration lines which are not zero VOC. Having a zero VOC paint is more important to Rose than having a flat paint. So until Sherwin Williams offers a washable flat paint with zero VOC, I’m sure we will continue to butt heads over the sheen. I know we might be able to find another paint manufacturer with a washable flat paint with zero VOC, but we really like Sherwin Williams paints for their quality, colors and price.

Interior Paint

Now onto painting the inside of this sunroom! It was all hands on deck this week because there was so much surface area to cover. We weren’t just painting the new walls, but also the original siding walls, original windows and door, AND the ceiling. Yes, Rose didn’t want to see any more of that dull beige color in this new sunroom. It was a lot to take on so we brought my dad back one final time and while Rose and our oldest daughter also pitched in.

My job was to paint the ceiling and the walls above 8ft. That back wall is over 12ft high so I had a lot to cover. Not to mention that it required two coats of paint since we were painting a darker color with a lighter color. I spent nearly the entire time with my arms above my head and by the end my shoulders were so tired and sore. Also reaching up into those top corners was particularly difficult with my 8ft ladder.

My dad’s job was to focus on the windows and doors. For the original windows and doors, he needed to first tape around them, then prime and finally paint them. This was slow tedious work, but he’s got steady hands and is very patient. In between coats, he worked on the trim around the new windows and doors.

Rose and our daughter worked on the wall sections below 8ft. It was a true team effort and I think it came out great. We are really excited to see this room coming together. Next we are going to be installing the new floor so be sure to check back next week!
